Sounds, like a solution. I guess I was looking for solution where I did not have to remove the barbs from the car. But all solutions seem to lead toward removal.

the hose into a vise pointing upwards and using a rubber mallet to hammer
the barb into the hose.
Worked like a charm on both hoses for the fuel pump.
