Shannon, The vacuum solenoid cuts off the vacuum advance on the distributor
when you are at idle or let your foot off the gas. This a one way Delorean
is trying to drop the timing advance back to ( O ) . Other than that as long
as the hoses are connected and your driving it won't effect the running.
Even at idle it may run fast if the solenoid isn't cutting off the vacuum.

Subject: [DML] Identification of Part - Distributor Advance Solenoid?
While working on my car to try and get it to pass emissions, I noticed
a loose wire behind the fuel distributor. It was by a round gold item
behind the fuel distributor that appears to have two vacuum hoses off
the side of it on the driver's side. There were electrical prongs on
which the wire fir perfectly. My engine diagram seems to indicate that
this gold colored object is a distributor advance solenoid. Am I
correct and if so what function does it serve. I have no idea how long
it hasdhas been unplugged but the car seemed to be working fine with
it unplugged unless I unplugged it today while working on other stuff.
