John,
I agree "black paint is black paint" but 10 years of testing and over 200
Delorean shock kits have shown me that "collars" are not necessarily always
"collars," no matter where you buy them. And having a tax number and buying
from industrial locations is one of those "been there, done that" things that
never produced a collar that I found acceptable to use for one of my shock kits.
And I don't quite understand the economics of buying some sort of industrial
collar and then spending the time and money to "modify" it to the way you want
it, but I'm sure you've worked thru the cost. All the collars I've ever
supplied were custom machined from aircraft grade aluminum specifically for the
shocks they went with and were designed only for this shock application. They were
then inspected and checked for accuracy and then polished before being sent
with the kit. Oh, now that I think about it, I guess I now understand your
"black paint" comment, anyway.........
And when you say "shocks in this category (soft ride) don't vary much
except in color and brand" I don't necessarily agree. I've tested dozens of
different shocks from different companies that are all within the same "category"
and they all have different ride characteristics and qualities. That's the
reason shock companies make so many different variations. But a lot of "ride
quality" comes down to personal preference also, so you can do as you like with
picking which shock you use.
John, I'm not trying to get into a fight or anything like that over this.
Like I said, you're free to produce any type of product you want and different
shock setups for the Delorean is one thing owners have needed for a long
time. The basic collar design is simple (altho you will find it's not as simple as
it looks) and I'm really surprised someone hasn't copied it before now. Good
luck with your new shock kit.
What I do want D owners to understand tho is that this shock kit you are
making is NOT the same as the "Touring" kit I make and it is also NOT being
made or supplied to you by me. Your kit and my kit are two different, separate
products that now offer owners additional choices for our cars.

Marty,
The collars I'm using I'm buying at two different locations here in
Dallas.
I won't say they are common unless you are set up with at tax number
to buy
at industrial locations like I am. I can also buy them cheaper than
making
them and then were going to modify them to the way we want them.
Actually
when I bought them at the 2 locations, they were the same collars in 2
different packages.
