I wasn't even going to respond to this opinion-laden statement but I
haven't figured out how to nail my hands to my desktop yet.
My statement was full of the facts of my actual ownership experience.
These things have actually happened to me. Your statement is long on
opinion and conjecture and short on fact. The only fact I could find
in your statement was your actual experience of reliabily with your
own cars.
What do you want me to say tux? After busting my wallet and my
knuckles on the car for 10 straight months (4 years ago), it doesn't
give me problems. I get in, I turn the key, it starts and I drive it.
It doesn't matter if it's 11 degrees or 101 degrees. The A/C blows
cold, the idle doesn't hunt, the Lambda system is correctly tuned. It
doesnt' just "run". It runs correctly and well. I've driven it for
3.5 years. I don't know what record of trouble-free driving would
suit your opinion of reliablity. In fact, my good friend Mike Cohee's
car has been just as reliable for him over roughly the same amount of
time. We drive our cars more or less the same amount, which is
somewhere in between "daily driver" and "garage queen". If your
DeLoreans have not been reliable for you perhaps yours, or your local
mechanic's skills are not up to par, or your maintenance and repair
methodology requires adjustment.
I don't really appreciate you speaking for me when you state that "we
ALL" like the looks and attention it gets. I neither dislike nor like
the attention. It's simply a by-product of ownership. I did NOT buy
the car for what anyone else would think of it. In fact, you've no
idea how many friends and family tried to discourage me from buying
it. The reasons were many: "It's an orphan, you'll never find
parts". "BTTF is so nerdy", "DeLorean trafficked drugs" Blah blah
blah. I own MY car, for ME. I don't drive the car hoping DeLorean
fans will pay attention to me, or fishing for compliments. Frankly,
I'd rather be left alone. When I feel the urge to discuss the
DeLorean socially, I attend a DeLorean social event with other
owners. Don't lump me into some generic owner pigeon-hole that you've
developed in your own mind.
Lastly, why even ask -me- why people are hostile towards the car? If
you're implying that it's my attitude towards people, I doubt that's
the cause. In many of the negative experiences I've had, people have
done or said something negative about or to the car without even
exchanging words with me. Hell, I've had total strangers follow me
home and pull right into my driveway to argue about the car! That
incident was nearly worth of a 911 call. Fortunately it didn't come
to that.
Anyway my point is, speak for yourself, not for me. My car works
great and I didn't buy it because my ego needs stroking from gas-
station admirers.
