Oh Phooey on that bunk.
I owned mine for 3 years before I ever even tried to fix the A/C.
The system was open to the air for 3 years at least. I flushed it,
removed the compressor, retro-fitted it and the rest of the system
for R-134, slapped a new accumulator on it and had ice cold air with
no dripping inside my car.
The 25 year old A/C hose rubbed itself raw on a small metal clip
until a hole developed and the freon blew out. For kicks, I replaced
all the hoses and the evaporator, reconnected it all and it still
blows cold and doesn't drain into the car.
I don't know jack about A/C beyond what being on submarines and the
workshop manual taught me. I never let a A/C shop near it. You just
have to read the manual, think outside the box and be persistent.
