You need to make sure there is no excess play in the linkage. Check the rubber washers in the ends of the links that the bolts go through. Adjust the linkage as per the Workshop Manual. A 1/2 turn one way or the other can make a difference. Make sure the shifter is working properly. You must pull the knob up to get over the reverse gate. If the pin is bent that can prevent you from getting into reverse. The linkage may also require lubrication. The long pin should also have a smaller pin installed inside it to make it stronger. Check the motor mounts for any cracks. If you have a blown motor mount it will make it hard to shift too. The front left one goes first so look it over carefully.
