The joint at the TAB has to move in all 3 planes. It cannot be reduced to a simple pivot. The business end of the trailing arm moves up and down and fore and aft as the rear wheel goes over bumps. The trailling arm also twists as the body of the car moves about it's roll center. If you pin both sides of the TAB you lose the fore/aft motion and the twist.
