Hello Alistair Before you go into pulling the starter out of the car check and clean the battery connections. First start with the cables at the battery itself and then move on to clean the ground where the black battery cable is bolted to the frame. It's on the right side of the car right where the trailing arm bolt is. When you engage the starter the large load on the electrical system causes overload on the weak and dirty connections. That actually opens the circuit and that is why all the lights dim. I give it a 99% that when you clean the connections everything will be back to normal. Good luck Greetings from snowy Poland!
