Peter, Check your Lower control arms! I had a similar thing happen to me last year and what it was was a 2 inch crack in the lower control arm which caused the tyre to rub on the fender.The control arms are of a pretty woeful construction and I found that the other arm was badly rusted and about too break aswell.
