That makes good sense, but I don't think it is true.  I once talked to John 
and he said the DMC-12 was just the original designation, as they expected 
to sell it for 12K,  but costs kept rising, however by that time the DMC-12 
indicator was used throughout their design work and manufacture so rather 
than try to change it, they just left it alone.  The only other number he 
mentioned to me was the future bus which he said would be DMC-80.
