The most likely cause is play in the steering. This is usually caused by worn parts. In fact it may not be 1 worn part but the cumulative affect of many. First of all check the tire pressures. This can have a huge affect. Next get the car up on jackstands and while an assistant rocks the steering wheel back and forth look for "lost motion" between the parts. If you can't do this then get to a garage that does front end work. There is nothing mysterious here, it is a simple front suspension. Before condeming the rack you have to check all the other parts but yes, a worn rack can cause this. Driving like this is extremly dangerous. You can't stay in your lane and in an emergency situation you could lose control. A Delorean in good shape has a very stable and solid steering feel, what you are experiencing is way off from normal.
