A pop or a thud...    FROM WHERE? - trunk, engine compartment, passenger
seat, .......

could be.....
blown out spark plug
water in gas tank
bad fuel pump
plugged fuel filter
back fire
loose distributor shifted timing
loose sparkplug wire

Does the engine still idle smoothly?

Need more details to offer any more help.
