First of all, there's nothing particularly confusing or mysterious about
Delorean brakes. They're vacuum boosted hydraulic disc brakes with
two-piston calipers in all four corners. The master cylinder does the
front-to-rear proportioning. Any shop that looks confused surely is.
Leave straightaway.
That said, your problem is most likely the master cylinder. If the
pedal is over-hard, the vacuum servo or the vacuum feed to the servo
could be faulty. We carry our own newly-made brake master that features
correct 62/38 proportioning and a cool cast-in DMC logo. Part number
105543, $124.95. Easy installation. Here's a pic:
