Mike,
Try using one of those rubber pads used for opening bottle lids to give you
more grip. If that doesn't work try a strap-wrench. If that doesn't work say
two Hail Mary's or pray to Allah before heating the base with a Butane torch
and have another go at it with the strap-wrench:).

I have not seen this question before but I have tried a few times to
get the shift knob off. I have had a stainless one since before I even
got the car.
The knob won't budge and I don't want to damage anything in doing it -
any suggestions?
