Perhaps your flywheel has some damaged or missing teeth. This happens when
someone tries to start a car that's already running! I'd have to hear it to
be sure. BTW do you have a manual or an automatic?

Every once in a while when i go to start my car the engine makes this 
awful grinding noise, then in have to turn the key all the way back to 
the insert position and try again. To start it.
