Contacts normally are plated with silver to prevent rust and corrosion and to have a better conductivity. As I answered Wayne back, I normally just clean off the dirt and grease with contact cleaner and re-insert the connector a time or to. The wiping action of them going back together a time or 2 will resurface the contacts and normally won't scrape off the silver plating. I don't use any kind of a wire brush, but a pipe cleaner would be ok if you don't want to scrape off the silver.
