[DML] Mystery Oil, (not Marvel)

I just posted a picture of the head mating surface for my intake 
manifold.  I see that one of the blind holes is filled with a very dark 
grey / black oil.  There does not seem to be any oil in the valley of 
death or any other place and this mystery oil is not the color of my 
motor oil.  Any ideas?
