I do know the difference between US and UK/European technical video standards!  The DVDs are playable in the USA. (Maybe you got a bootleg copy?)
BTW the guy in England selling the pirate copies on Ebay has been legally cautioned and has withdrawn all copyrighted material from the internet.  So no more illegal copies of Ulster tv programmes will be tolerated on Ebay.  Capiche?
