Good point - here's a much better spare part strategy: Since you have already spent the money on the new spare part, INSTALL IT on the car. If you must carry something, carry the OLD one. This will raise the average reliability of the car, and you still have the old part (as good as when you removed it) to loan to someone else! This works for everything from belts to fuel pumps.
