I'm sure you have checked but what the heck, you asked. If it will not idle down and purr you should not change the mixture that is already properly adjusted, or miss adjust anything else. I would check timing or something loose, missing or broken inside the distributor. Make sure the vacuum hoses or properly positioned on the vacuum advance solenoid. Do you use a dwell meter to set your mixture? Works really well. Then check timing.
