The tank is a pretty good echo chamber. Once that pump vibrates and the fuel level goes down it can resonate pretty well. When I first got my car, we drove it from New Mexico to Minnesota in September. Along about the badlands, I started to hear a vibration coming from what sounded like the right front footwell. It got louder as time went on. We pulled in to Wall Drug for lunch and gas, and when we hit the road again, the noise was gone. The only difference was fuel level and some cooling. It still gets pretty warm in South Dakota in September, so I think that was a contributor to the intensity of the sound. Ever since then, I have been able to count on a buzzing from the fuel tank as a reliable indicator of low fuel - much better than the tankzilla low fuel indicator lamp. I've had the car since 1993 and haven't had to change out the pump. Another possible source of the sound is a pinhole leak in the intake hose. Even a small leak is enough to draw some air into the pump once the fuel level goes down a bit. The cavitation caused by the air is pretty noisy. -- Mike -------------- Original message from "denverdelorean" <denverdelorean@xxxxxxxxx>: -------------- > > > > I just dont see how the sound could be coming from the pump.
