Besides possibly needing a tune up with fresh parts (spark plugs, air
filter, ignition wires) the most common causes are vacuum leaks (old
rubber hoses crack, split, and don't seal well) or the Lambda system
isn't working (first check the relay that supplies power to the Lambda
system, they seem to have a high failure rate).
