interior lamps (was diode location)

OK i found the diodes for my interior lamps and door ajar circuits. the 
driver's side one was unplugged. plugged it back in and now everything works as 
stock. however i am interested in improvements (it's never good enough!)

1. a while back on the DML people were mentioning using heavy duty diodes. i 
am not too keen on electrical things, so why is a heavy duty diode going to 
better? why should i upgrade, and if i should, exactly what parts do i ask for 
at a radio shack or wherever.

2. the lamp delay module. it sucks. as i understand it, this has been a 
long time complaint for 2 decades. i have some photocopies of solutions 
involving quite a bit of soldering and circuit boards. i'm not good enough to do all 
this stuff.... does anyone have a better solution? or is this just something 
to live with. another DML'er and i were talking about how the delay setup that 
is in DW would be better if the starter would shut off the dome light when 
you got in (turn the key, start the car, dome light doesn't stay on for 90 
seconds before fade out). every other car on earth does it like this.....

any thoughts?
