I happen to own a 1987 Range Rover Classic with the radio antenna in the rear defrost, and I have to say that it does have very poor reception. I agree with Dave, the best option for your friend is to install the rear power antenna. The kit price recently dropped to $124.95 and includes the antenna assembly (motor and mast), mounting bracket, antenna extension, wiring and illustrated instructions. The trickiest part is trimming the rear quarter vent so the antenna can "pop out" but like David said, it comes with a template even for that.
