Mark - There are a few things that it could be, but my guess would
be that there is some room in one or more of your brake calipers for
the pads to slide fore and aft. When you back up, the pads slide
aft until they "bottom out", and forward when you then go forward.
There is typically a small amount of drag between the pads and the
rotors that can pull them a little. You can look carefully at each
of your brake pad sets to see if one of them has what appears to be
an abnormal amount of clearance between the pads and the calipers.
This, of course, is a somewhat wild guess ... a close look at drive
shafts, suspension bushings, etc. might yield some findings as
well. Let us know what you find.
