vapor canister...

If the "purge signal hose" ,that goes from the vapor canister to the 
intake manifold, is disconnected; would this affect the idling of the 
engine on startup due to one or both of the following? 
The intake would now have a vacuum leak?

The vapor canister is not releasing its contained vapor?

I am just wondering how important the closed vapor containment system 
really is, and if everyone still uses it. Has anyone eliminatd it 
from their car?
