Engine ticking noise. Not sure if it was always there

I'm noticing a noise lately that sounds like a socket wrench spinning 
(but a lot louder). That's the best way I can explain it. It seems to 
be coming from the lower section of the engine, near the oil pan.

I don't notice any abnormal readings on the dash, so all seems ok 
now. Could this be the oil pump or something? Is this a normal noise 
that for some reason I'm just picking up on now?
