I think the intent of the reply was just to not get in over your head 
by not having a fund for repairs. You can't expect to buy a 20+ year 
old used car and not have some things come up. Even if it is in 
perfect condition now something will happen, it always does. The worst 
case would be to have to stretch to keep up the payments, have a 
problem with the car, and then not be able to drive it (you will still 
have to keep up with the payments). Best to prepare by having a 
reserve for the inevitable problems that will come up. If you are 
thinking about an engine swap you are looking at spending a lot more 
than it would take to fix ANY problem that may come up with the motor.
