The little white box is a mechanical counter for the Lambda system. It turns on the "LAMBDA" light when you have gone a certain number of miles, and the oxygen sensor should be replaced. It expresses itself in terms of "percentage life" ... and must be reset when it has turned on the light. Naturally, you should replace the sensor at the same time that you reset the counter. This counter has some gears and other mechanisms inside, and could possibly "eat itself", causing a disconnect in your speedometer drive. Good luck.
