Walt- Before you do anything like that, try this; while the car is running, take the fuel pump housing and twist it in its seat. Move it in small bits in various directions. See if the noise quits while you do this, or the noise makes any variations. If it does, it means one of the hoses is crimped in an area causing the same restricted flow you're talking about.
