With a description of these symptoms the first area to check (assuming 
you have good gas in the tank) is the fuel enrichment system. See if 
the frequency valve is buzzing. It is located on the right valve cover 
and should sound like an angry hornet (if it is working you can't help 
but notice it). If it is working then it gets more complicated. Is the 
air filter blocked? Has the fuel filter ever been changed? Maybe you 
need a tune-up and replace all of the spark plugs and wires.
