I'll probably have to get in line on this one but: Alternators are very prone
to fail, particularly the early ones. To check a battery, disconnect a
cable, charge it up and see if it holds the charge for a day or two (charges
usually tend to leak off with a bad battery)( Or just take it into a local
garage they'll usually put a tester on it and tell you, free of charge). Try
your meter again and see if it's holding around 12.5 volts or so. Reconnect
the cable and put a drain on it (turn on the headlights) for maybe half an
hour (you can always recharge), test for voltage again. It sounds like a bad
alternator, or connection to it, but it never hurts to have a new battery
(unless you happen to get a defective one in which case you'll really go
bananas).
