When I got my D, I noticed the engine compartment light was not working and I 
subsequently bought a bulb, assuming it was burned out. Before I installed 
it, I noticed that the switch, supposed to be located on the upper left 
firewall where the plunger is depressed by the engine cover, was totally 
removed! 
Some owners have disabled theirs to prevent them from getting stuck on, 
melting the lens, and the hot plastic igniting after dripping on the red hot 
muffler. (Hopefully an overreaction.) But that may explain it.
