I know that in the early 80's I went to Germany and bought 2 Mercedes Benz 
shipping both home, and was forced to change the headlights and tail lights 
to meet DOT specs. In Europe they had a yellow side marker built into the 
tail light assembly, red was required in the USA. The Headlight set up was a 
bulb/prism version with the right headlight different than the left shedding 
more light to the side of the road. I thought it was neat, but illegal and I 
had to put sealed beams in it.
