[DML] Re: Reverse Lights

Scott is right. In all likelihood, your problem has to do with the so-called "multifunction switch" which comes as part of the computer governor assembly and sticks out of the transmission on the passenger side (follow one of the big black wires). It can indeed become misaligned, although it is keyed and reasonably robust. Note, however, that I had symptoms similar to yours, and it turned out the the switch was physically damaged. Looked ok, and when I tested the switch it seemed to work fine, but it could not be made to line up properly with the mechanism inside the transmission. I suspect that it took a hit with a rock at some point, or else was warped by heat. I replaced the governor assembly (which I had to do anyway) and all was well.

You can remove the switch for testing without draining the transmission--you will get some fluid out the hole, but not too much. You will find two little buttons, one of which should (if I remember correctly) make your backup lights go off when you press it (or maybe it was the other way around).

If your switch is bad but your governor is ok, you might ask around for a used one--somebody generates a spare every time they replace their governor.

Scott,

The reason the lights are on in reverse is b/c of the computer governor. Just jack up the car and on the passenger side where the computer governor plugs into the pan, there are 2 bolts and a clip. It could be a *slight* adjustment or the bolts could be loose. Have someone watching the reverse lights (just turn the key on, it dosen't need to be running) Push in on the connector and if the reverse lights go out, just tighten up the bolts. If they don't go out, *slightly* move the connector to the left or right until they go out and tighten the bolts up.

Hope this helps,
Duke
