I knew that the USDOT had mandated "Daytime Running Lights" but I thought
that they had repealed it. This regulation had 2 problems, IMHO. One is
that the DRL's are supposed to be at 90% brightness, which is fine except
that when I drive my DRL-enabled '95 GTI, I am forever forgetting to turn on
my headlights (and thus driving around at night with 10% less visibility).
The other problem is that motorcycles have been required to have the
constant headlight for as long as I can remember, and forcing the cars to do
the same makes the bikes less visible and more vulnerable.
Plus, how else can you identify a funeral procession?!? I'm glad the D
doesn't force me to run with the lights on all the time, I'm about ready to
rip the circuit out of the VW as it is!
