This, I think, I typically caused by the weak springs that are installed in the hood release.  I seam to remember someone selling stronger spring replacements that whould offer a better upwards boost to the hood.   (I myself currently have a "two hand" opening trunk....same with the engine cover.....just in the case of the engine cover it's "one hand....one piece of string")   :)

no, once you pull the release, it should push the lid up about 4 inches and 
release it from the latch. Then you pull it open.
