The car has always started since then until
recently.  The fuel gauge was at about 1/4 tank both times ?? (not sure if
that's an issue)

This could be an issue........The pick-up hose in a Delorean is about $90.00+ Some will either replace this hose with one that does not have the correct bends or cut the bad section out of the hose, to keep from paying this price. Either way the pick-up hose may not reach the bottom of the tank there for not picking up the gas when the tank is low.

 

Not saying that this has been done to your car, but something that you might want to look into.
