I, too have been a satisfied State Farm customer for years. When I 
got my D, I called them up and they added it to my policy at a very 
reasonable price without a blink.

However, it is essentially impossible to generalize about insurance 
companies. They set their policies based on complex criteria, 
including your age, your zip code, how long you have been a customer, 
your driving record, etc, etc. Moreover, these criteria are applied 
regionally, not nationally, and they are constantly shifting as 
companies target specific market segments via aggressive pricing 
while raising prices in other segments in hopes that existing 
customers will not bother to shop around. Add to this the variability 
in service attributable to the personality of your particular agent 
and it becomes clear that the situation is pretty chaotic.
