Replacing the "whole unit" is not as simple as it may sound. You would have to remove the refrigerent, replace the "whole unit", vacuum the system, and then recharge with refrigerent. The removing and refilling with refrigerent is a bigger job than just replacing the bearing and I suspect the bearing isn't even bad. Buying a used compressor is no guarantee that the bearing in the new one is any better than what you already have! This is like killing a fly with a shotgun.
