I've never seen any issue with just leaving it as it. It does not
seem to be an open-cell foam. I've never seen the foam rot, and I've
seen a lot of these cars apart now.
I HAVE seen someone very effectively cover it with duct tape.
Otherwise, just about any paint would do the job.
