That sounds quite similar to a problem my father had a few years ago. There was a bizarre rattling sound coming from the left front wheel during braking (this wasn't a DeLorean). It turned out that a small rock (perhaps half an inch wide) had gotten jammed between the brake rotor and the hub. Once the rock was removed (and the rotor inspected for damage), all was well.
