I too connected my cable to the spool. That was in 1989 and 40,000+
miles ago with no problem. I did however set it up so that there was
little slack at the throttle closed which also prevented a possible
wide-open-throttle position by the cruise control. Maximum is
probably 3/4 or less which maintains speeds on highways at 75mph ok
and prevents too much slack build up of the throttle cable.
