As far as I know--and guys, correct me if I'm wrong--the hood ornaments appeared *only* on the "flat" hoods (that is, to say, that your ornament was added by the PO). After John DeLorean had to stop making the gas flap, and then eventually the grooves, he needed to add *something* to "dress it up" a little. The hood emblem seemed like a good idea at the time, I suppose. (note: this is merely speculation on my part, with only a few sprinkles of truism: most everything here I'm assuming from what I've heard.)
