This should not have been all that hard to figure out. If the trans was "dead" the first thing any good shop would do, after checking the fluid level, would be to see if there was any line pressure. No line pressure would have lead you right to the fluid pump. On a Delorean you can pull it off without taking the trans all apart. You do have to remove the trans from the car though. As soon as he removed the pump he must have found the broken shaft. I am very curious as to why the shaft broke. This is not a common failure. I would suspect the fluid pump to have a problem to cause the shaft to break.
