David T may be old enough to remember when there were quality differences between low octane and high octane gas (how old are you David?). In the bad old days "high test" was refined differently. Some people called it "white gas" because it didn't glue up your carburetor the way lower rated fuels did (octane has no effect on gum and varnish). That could have affected his answer.
