I, too, have had a key break off in the ignition.  Not
once, but twice.  Both keys were "aftermarket".  

In each case they broke at the narrowest spot; ie,
where there is a significant cut on both sides of the
key.  So I not only now have a sturdier blank, but
also had the lock tumblers reset so as to avoid such
an obvious weak spot.
