It doesn't matter of course if you have to mangle the filter up to get
it  off. I have used pipe wrenches, pump pliers, strap wrenches, and
in some extreme cases I have jabbed a long screwdriver right through.
Leave yourself some room to turn it. Once you move it a little it
should break free. After you get it off make sure that the casting is
completely clean ie, there is no old gasket left remaining so when you
put the new on on it will seal. Be careful not to cut yourself on the
sharp edges and it may get messy with oil dripping out. This happens
when the filter isn't changed for a LONG time.
