Ya, I knew this and just wondered if they thought all 81's had an
antenna hole. I actually have it located in the back so no issue with
me. Just didnt want to get an 81 and have a hole in it.

Ok, I know that the early cars had the not so great windshield antennas; the mid-'81 cars had fender antennas; and all the cars from late '81 on had the retractable antennas that popped out of the rear quarter panel vents. But what's the VIN cut off for each? I can't say I've ever seen a D with a fender antenna... and I know I've seen at least 100+ DeLoreans by now. Are they the rarest?

My car is a late '81, vin 6938, and I bought it new. The dealer had about 20
DeLoreans on his lot and they were mixed '81's and '82's. Mine has a fender
antenna as did all the '81's on the lot. The '82's had the retractable
antenna. I've seen many vin numbers earlier than mine with the retractable
antenna so I really can't explain why mine had the fender version. I think a
lot was done in the quality assurance centers and I'd guess a lot of mixing
and matching went on there. I owned my car for a couple of years before I
finally caught a fender in the right light to see that a bit of repair had
been done on it before it was shipped to the dealer.

I think you meant the RIGHT front fender. I am wondering out loud here
but it should be possible to put a power retractable antennae into the
front right fender, that would solve the cover problem and use the
hole in the fender to it's best. They make some very compact power
antennae units now that weren't available back in the 80's. BTW even
with a hole in the cover for the antennae it is awkward to put a cover
on and take off with the antennae, it is probably best to not make the
hole and just remove the antennae as you already do.

Yesterday was the big day, the car I was looking at here locally in
Dallas was on eBay, I was up early with every alarm in the house set
to remind me of the auction. I was poised and ready to pounce.
At the last second, I won the auction for $15,000.00
I picked up the car a few hours later!
In my driveway is now a minty 81 Automatic.
The interior is perfect, soft and supple gray leather with no cracks
or tears, no dents or dings, so far everything is working good except
for a few little things shich I will get to in future posts.
I would post a picture, but you guys know what it looks like!
Now that I have it, I am sure everyone will be hearing more from me!
Not only will I be doing some custom work on this car, It will be
featured in my new documentery and all of you will be meeting me
at future events.
Glad to be in the club!

As I said in the previous post, I have this pristine like new car.
It has been kept in a controlled garage it's whole life.
It is like I am getting an almost new car.
I don't deserve it.
Unfortunatly, I don't have a garage to put it it, or even a car port
to park it under! (GASP!)
It will be sitting out under the sun, rain, whatever the north Texas
weather throws at it.
I know it is doomed.
I am hoping that some of you can give me the best tips of how to
protect the dash and interior from cracking, warping, etc.
What is the best stuff to use?
I already know to avoid Armour All, but I would like to know about
some specific bottles of stuff to use.
I will be getting some sort of a winshield cover to help keep the sun
out, the side windows have been tinted with a mirror type tint and it
looks great!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
NOW FOR PROBLEMS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(1)
The passenger window does not close all the way, it goes up to about
1/4" of an inch and stops. Any suggestions anyone?
(2)
Wobbly steering wheel.
I have tightend the wheel as much as I can, but it seems to be loose
by about 1/4" up to 1/2" and makes a "tick tick" noise on bumps!
Drives me crazy!
I assume that the famous nylon bushings that everyone sells is for
thie problem? How are they installed? Is it difficult to install?
(3)
Dome lights.
Are the dome lights supposed to come on when the doors open?
I have put new bulbs in and they come on when they are manually
operated, so I suppose that the problem would be the switch on the
side of the doors?
I know that the switch that operates the divers side door warning
lights are sticky and if you giggle it the lights come on.
However this doesn't work on the other switches, so I am not sure
of the source.

Re: past posts from owners with snapped off manifold screws:
According to just received Volvo 260 CI manual:
B28F used "shear-head" balancing screws. Are designed to snap off
easily when snugged down.
Idle inlet screw never shear-head.
Since all three ports are identical: if owner with sheared off screws
wants to use them, can substitute two inlet screws. Should be easy to
remove sheared threads since over-torquing was not cause.

Until a few weeks ago I owned VIN 06881, it had the right front fender
antenna. Another guy over here ownes VIN 6831 and he also has a fender
antenna.
Someone drove against the right side of my car in March so I had a big
dent in my fender and it needed to be replaced. We ordered one without
an antenna hole so there's one more less D with a fender antenna.
Even over here we tried to find out which vin numbers were made with
what kind of antenna but there's no real line to measure on.
I heard that after it was obvious the window antenna's weren't so great,
you could let it be replaced with a fender antenna or a quarter panel
antenna. The fender antenna was a cheaper option then the electrical
quarter panel antenna so it was al up to the owner at that time.
I don't know if it's correct but it would explain the variety of antenna
options throughout the vin numbers.

Daniel,
I have two BAE single turbo cars. On both I changed the after turbo
plumbing. One has a bullet glasspack only and the other has a catalitic
converter only. The glasspack has the better sound and looks clean. The
Cat car has a lot more rumble and resonance at all times in the car.
Both sound "sporty" and I will not be changing any thing about them
soon. The Cat car was a Calif. car and passed emissions several times
there. The Glasspack car is in Idaho. Both are single right side outlet
with fake left tip. Both are candidates for nicer Stainless Tips.
Because of the aftermarket wheels making the car look more aggressive, I
prefer the more aggressive sound.

I don't know the VIN that it took effect, but in the service updates
book I have from Delorean-One you will find dealer instructions on how
to take a hole saw and cut a hole in the fender, and route the antenna
wire to the stereo.
It doesn't explain why this is done or on what VIN's.
I suppose that this is to fix poor reception on windsheild mounted
antennas. I never thought that those worked well.
It could be that maybe replacement windshields with built in antennas
may not have been available and they had to add the antenna.
But they were NOT installed at the factory, they were added by the
dealers as per this paper I am looking at.
I have seen these fender antennas, and they look horrible.
The best antenna I have see was tilted back and mounted on the of the
louver. It looked clean.

Very doubtful. You'd have to cut an awful lot of stuctural fibreglass
out underneath the fender - as it is, the manual antenna requires a 1.5"
(ish) hole drilled to a depth of approx 18".
1458 Windscreen antenna only
2727 fender & w/s antenna
4426 (sept 81) electric antenna
6986 fender antenna
12171 (right-hand prototype) fender antenna, now filled but no space
where the electric one would go because of additional brake servo - FWIW
Some right handers also have "bee-sting" antennas on the front of the
T-panel, all factory original.
I have not taken the fender off my project car, 4426, but it may well
have had a new fender. The PO was fanatical about it. If it has, it'll
have a mahoosive hole underneath!

My car is 11596 and it has a windsheild antenna AND rear retractable! I
suppose the glass was broken and replaced before it was sold the first time.

Sounds like a motor problem. Open up the door by removing the upper and
lower trim panels (buy a fir-tree clip pry tool first) and observe the window
going up and down. a new regulator is probably needed.

Look under the dash behind the pedal box where the column goes thru the
firewall. there is probably a black rubber bushing split into pieces and you might
see fiberglass dust below the hole where the column rubs. to fix, you need to
remove the binnacle, the knee pads, and the complete steering column by
seperating the U-joints at the intermediate shaft (near the rack and pinion). a
new nylon bushing will do the trick to fix that. another probably could be the
collapsable cage is broken or cracked and ratting around, but you said the
wheel itself is moving, so i think the bushing is the problem.

Does your door ajar light or door running lights work properly? that will
tell you if the switches are working or not unless you have disconnected wires at
the diodes (near your foot at the gas pedal in those bright blue and red
plastic tubes) or perhaps your lights are wired wrong. use the wiring diagram to
decode which wire goes where. the picture isn't a scale model btw. the wire
should be placed according to circuit function and NOT by how each wire
appears in relation to each other on the diagram. no matter what, check all of your
connections at the switches themselves, and make sure you have a plastic
cover over each one. clean with contact cleaner or an eraser. the switch can get
jammed in a door or bent at the backside, so replace as needed (they are
cheap).

You should use 303 Aerospace. You can get it at most marine and RV
shops. It stops most all of UV damage when used regularly. It
doesn't get that greasy shine and doesn't contain the harmful stuff
amorall does (pdms I think is what it is called) It is great for
leather and vinyl. It won't destroy/break down the clear coat that
is on the leather seats like the oils in leather conditioners will
which does cause them to crack over time.

The Texas sun is going to be BRUTAL on the car. At the very least you
should use one of those windscreen covers that go inside the
windshield to protect the dash and binnacle. It will also help keep
the sun off the leather seats and the temperature inside the car
lower. If you have the later gear shift cover with the little medalion
in the center it will shrivel up like a potato chip if the sun gets on
it (automatics only). A real quick and cheap thing for it is just put
a sock over it when the car sits. A cover would be a good idea if you
don't even have a carport. Clean and protect the leather with Lexal or
something else at least as good. Use a silicone protectant on the
rubber seals like the door seals. Use a tire spray with a UV
protectant but NO SILICONES on the tires. Try to keep parked on paved
surfaces to prevent moisture from getting to the frame.
Play in the steering can come from several sources, you have to have
someone move the wheel while you look for the source. It could be the
u-joints on the steering column to the tie rod ends to the rack itself.
Check to see that the wires are attached to the door switches, many
owners have them disconnected so the battery won't go dead if the
doors are left open. You should change ALL the fluids in the car, the
brake fluid, final drive, windscreen, transmission, coolant, and
engine oil. I would do a complete service including grease job,
tune-up and replace the cooling system hoses, belts, thermostat if
origional. For the elcetrical system get rid of the fan fail relay
and/or the bypass wire, unplug the locking module, get the relay
upgrade kit, check and clean all the fuses. If the battery is over 5
years old replace it too. Call a vender and order an oil filter, a
drain plug adapter, A couple of blending pads, and the manuals right
away. Go over with the vender if you have all the recalls on the car.
If not then order them too. Have at least 2 keys. The second can be an
Ilco if you don't care about looks but at least have 2 in case you
loose 1 or it breaks. As you use the car you will find more and more
things do to on it. Right now go check the tire pressures on the car.
They are on a label inside the glove box on the cover. The spare will
be flat so have it resealed with Camel Bead Sealer. Enjoy it. The more
you drive it the better it will run (after you fix everything that
breaks!!!!).

Before you go to far on repairs, save yourself some money and buy the
service manuals that are available from the DeLorean vendors.
