An honest to goodness backfire (vs muffler explosion) can be an eye
opener. Nothing quite like fire shooting out top of your
carburetor/upper air assembly/whatever. Is caused by spark when intake
valve still open. Allows fuel mixture to ignite backwards to metering
device.

Go back to first pulley mark before eyebrows burn off.

Muffler explosions are altogether different. Are caused by unburned
fuel igniting in hot exhaust system.

Canister coils are pretty much interchangeable (assuming you want
whatever voltage they're putting out). I'm running a Pertronix. Louie
G is running a Jeg's private label. Stay away from the MSD with "power
tower" terminal (probably wouldn't fit under cover), but any of their
others should work.

The way to go about this is to get a test light or a meter and check
for voltage at key points. I would start at the starter and see if it
gets voltage when you turn the key. Also a good place to start is the
battery. A bad connection or a bad battery can cause these symptoms.
Take the battery out and have it tested and charged so you know at
least that is good. If the battery is over 5 years old it is suspect
as are all of the "big" connections.

Just to add my $.02, I live in KY and I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee I sold to
a man that lived in Indiana.  About 3 months later, I recieved a notice
saying I was overdue on the taxes/registration.  I went down to the County
Clerk's office, explained the situation and showed them my documentation
(bill of sale, copy of title with his signature, and all of his
information).  They then told me to that this happens all of the time
because Indiana doesn't send the data to them that quickly.  It only took
them about 5 mins. and they had the whole thing straightend out.

I can only assume from this that WI may also be slow moving.  Have you gone
to the County Clerk's office and talked with them?

Well...the back-fire isnt' -that- strong on mine :)

But you're saying to set the crank to the first mark and -not- "0"
and drop in the dizzy. I'll do that today.

MSD "Blaster 2" Coil is the one that you want. Ask for that, and
you'll be fine. The only variations of it are a plastic housing, or a
chromed one for appearance. It's a total 'drop-in' replacement, and
even comes with a brand new ballast resistor. And yes, you'll need to
install the resistor, but it's not that big of a chore. Cost me $50 @
my local speed shop.

MSD is pretty much the best choice. I noticed no improvement after
swapping out my old coil for a 20+ year old NOS one, and a brand-new
BOSCH coil for the application was around $80, and was still only
kicking out 18K volts max. And what ever you do, stay away from those
damned Acell coils! I put one in my car, and it ran horrible. On top
of that, if the battery was drained at all, the motor wouldn't kick
over. I've heard the same thing from others with differant makes and
models of cars too. Even experimented in my garage. Cranked, and
cranked the motor, nothing happened. Dropped in the old BOSCH coil,
fired right up.

So pretty much, MSD is your best choice for a replacement coil when
it comes to both performance, and your wallet.

Ehm... Basic physics says that on an OPEN circuit, the
voltage across the gap ALLWAYS is as high as the feed
for the circuit...

Only once you connect ANYTHING in the gap an actual
voltage can be measured on the component...

If you're getting 4.6V over the coil, you're loosing 7.4V
somewhere... What voltage do you get across the resistors?

Similar thing happened to me.  Wrote to the group and got some advice from
Rich.  Bottom line is I checked the connection on the ballast resistor and
it started working fine.

Well,

As the subject says, just found the group and thought I'd say "Hi
everybody!" or maybe it should be "Everybody!  Everybody!" Anyway glad
to find the group. I've loved DeLoreans for as long as I can remember,
and still hope one day to own one. Now I have a whole bunch of people
that love them with me to talk to.

God that sounds wrong.

I realize this discussion wasn't about -my- car but my voltage across
the coil (+ to -) terminals was only 6.73 volts. All of the
resistances were in spec by the manual -except- the coil, (+) terminal
to H.T. socket, it's supposed to be 7000 ohms and mine is 9500-ish.

It's an original coil. This tells me my spark won't be as good due to
the extra resistance. True Jan? Or am I hosed up?

I have seen several examples of minor damage from an engine backfire
that might be worth checking.  There is a slender steel bar covering the
air metering flap door under the air cleaner assembly.  This bar has a
rubber bumper and is intended to restrict upward movement of the round
disk underneath.  If a backfire has occured the internal pressure will
"blast" the disk outward and bend the bar.  This then allows the disk to
become sticky as it can wedge into the housing.  I have found that a
gentle hammer blow to the bar will bring it back staight again.  Just
somethng to look for.

Thanks for your support for the magazine.

With all the car shows going on this summer and all the get togethes across
the globe we would like to remind you to submit your photos and articles on the
events to us so we can get them in the magazine.

We just made another run of magazines so if you haven't ordered we have
plenty in stock.

I talked to Kathryn DeLorean and she and her family are planning to attend.
(She said she needed a break)

See you in Pigeon Forge.

I also have been asked is there anything for kids to do in Pigeon Forge.

The answer to that is I hope they have enought time to do even 5% of whats
there.

Thanks for your support.

We will be online for ordering soon with credit card and the registration for
Pigoen Forge will also be online starting in December.

How's it looking so far??  I'm out in Indiana land and there is a guy
I've found kind of close to me in Illnois (Hey, it's not California,
so he's close) and he has a DeLorean with a Stainless frame, chassis,
etc. Had it special built. (A lot of you probably know who I'm talking
about.) Anyway .... if I can find his address again maybe you'd like
it? He could get you in touch with the company that built the chassis
for him. (Hey, they've built one, why not more right?)

But .... if that's not the go for you .... how much did you give for
